QuarterEFlyer811This weekend I get an opportunity to play principal bassoon with the Brentwood Symphony Orchestra.  On this program we are going to do a variety of music including Ravel’s “Bolero”, excerpts from Stravisnky’s “Firebird Suite”, Debussy’s “Prelude to the afternoon of a Faun”, and other selections.  Bolero is a BIG bassoon excerpt for orchestral auditions.  I’ve practiced this for dozens of hours and performed it for several auditions but have never performed it with an orchestra.  The concert is going to be a multi-media experience, with video for several of the pieces and the orchestra is encouraged to wear costumes and masks to celebrate the Halloween season.

Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite” is the one of my favorite pieces of all time.  Below is an excerpt as heard and seen in Fantasia 2000.

Here is another classic sequence from the original Fantasia featuring Dukas

“Sorcerer’s Apprentice”

What is some of your favorite scary music?
