Summer is in the air today! The Santa Ana winds are blowing and it is dry and hot. A good day for staying inside in the air-conditioning. May is the last full month of school for most of us, packed with lots of concerts. Did you know that May is actually National Chamber Music Month?! It’s a celebration of the many styles of small ensemble music performed and presented across the nation. Check out the Facebook event and Chamber Music America’s website for a listing of all of the events taking place this month.

It seems appropriate then that this Saturday is the inaugural Chamber Music Statewide Competition, which is being held in La Jolla and sponsored by the Music Teacher’s Association of California. Third Wheel is taking place in the professional division along with our friends and colleagues from the West Coast Woodwind Quintet. We are excited to hear the other groups performing in the concert on Saturday. It will be a great chance to hear what top chamber ensembles exist in our great state.

In thinking about chamber music today, who are some of your favorite chamber groups? You’ve heard me talk about Deux Sons already, but a few of my other favorite groups are Calder Quartet, Project Trio, Eighth Blackbird, and I recently discovered Flutronix. I’m always open to hearing about new music so let me know what gets YOU energized!
