I know that I have already mentioned Third Wheel’s recent inspirational encounter with the string trio Time for Three, but honestly, I just can’t get their performance out of my head. So I wanted to share a little more with you. Check out this video here — it’s an amazing take on one of Third Wheel’s favorite tunes, “Blackbird.”

This is everything a cover song should be and more. This ensemble embodies so many of the ideals that we identify with and work for in Third Wheel: challenging the traditional roles of our instruments, challenging the definition and boundaries of classical music vs. pop music, and just plain putting on a good show and creating good music.

Going to a concert for me is like recharging my musical/creative batteries, and the irony of being a professional musician is that way too often we are only performing concerts all the time and rarely get the opportunity to attend one. I am so glad that we were able to hear this group play. It is so encouraging to see that there are so many great ensembles out there that really believe the same things about music and performance that we do. And there’s no doubt that audiences are on the same side, too. So let’s all keep on fighting the good fight — to perform (or attend performances of) interesting music in interesting ways and not get caught up in labels, genres or rules.
