What have I been listening to lately?! Well, I love a variety of different music ranging from pop to alternative and dance music. As a classically trained musician I can always learn from artists in other genres and apply what I hear to how I play the flute. It’s really important to understand rhythms and how to keep a groove. I can also appreciate a catchy melody. These are a few of my favorites from this Summer. Maybe you’ll discover something that you haven’t heard before – I encourage you to share with me what you’ve been listening to!

“Wake me Up” Avicii – I really like the sound of his voice. The quick dance tempo makes me want to jump around as I’m listening to it.

“Safe and Sound” Capital Cities – This one is particularly catchy and Eugene’s band-mate Spencer Ludwig, plays trumpet on this track. How cool is that?! They just got back from a tour of Japan. This video that they filmed is really unique – still not quite sure how it fits into the lyrics.

“Treasure” Bruno Mars – The sound of this track makes me happy! It feels like a throw-back to an earlier era and the choreographed dance is fun too.

“Let the Groove Get In” Justin Timberlake – I’ve used this as an exercise with my students to help them learn how to keep a steady beat. It has a perfect groove that makes you want to get up and dance.

“Blurred Lines” Robin Thicke – Again the melody is catchy on this one – the simpler the better.  The “yells” in the background add to the dance-feel.
